Grinding Specifications:

Burr Type and Size: 53mm conical burr set, stainless steel (heptagonal or multi-angle conical design, suitable for espresso and pour-over coffee). Factory burrs are high-hardness tool steel (HRC~58, high-nitrogen stainless steel).

Burr Speed: 150–300 RPM (user-controlled, low-speed grinding minimizes heat and static electricity).

Grind Adjustment: Stepless internal adjustment ring, clockwise for finer, counter-clockwise for coarser.

Grind Scale: Scale from finest to coarsest. Factory calibration point is "0", which is the burr contact point (do not grind at "0" setting). Adjustment precision is approximately 0.01mm per click (10 microns per click). This allows for extremely fine adjustment.

Grind Range: Can grind from fine powder for Turkish coffee/espresso (approx. 100–200 microns particle size) to coarse powder for French press (1000 microns and above). Total grind range is approximately 2.5 turns of the adjustment ring, from zero to fully open (may be indicated as 0–10 on the dial).

Recommended Use: Suitable for espresso machines, Moka pots, pour-over coffee makers, drip coffee makers, AeroPress coffee makers, French presses, and cold brew makers. (Note: Extremely fine Turkish coffee grind is close to the adjustment limit but can be calibrated by going slightly past zero – caution is advised to avoid burr contact.)

Capacity and Throughput:

Hopper Capacity: 30-40 grams of beans (designed for single dosing; clear with bellows after each dose).

Grounds Bin Capacity: Approximately 40 grams (included measuring cup holds about 40 grams of coffee grounds).

Grinding Speed: At medium grind and full motor speed, grinding speed is approximately 1.5–2.0 grams/second. Espresso grind speed is approximately 1 gram/second (actual speed will vary depending on coffee bean type and grind setting). The planetary gearbox ensures stable grinding speed even when grinding dense coffee beans for fine grinds.

Retention: <0.2g without RDT (dry), <0.1g with RDT or bellows (10g dose, measured after seasoning). In practice, retention is near zero due to the vertical path and purge system.

Experience unprecedented precision grinding!

The Varia VS4 is the next evolution in single-dose grinders—it combines a 200W brushless motor, a precise planetary gearbox, and a 53mm 6-core conical burr system for outstanding consistency from espresso to filter coffee.

The world's first integrated burr chamber, fully CNC-machined and anodized, achieves ultra-low retention and enables a clean, efficient workflow. The electromechanical flow geometry guides coffee grounds through the burr chamber with aerodynamic stability, ensuring smooth particle flow, minimized static electricity, and predictable extraction results.

Precision Engineering through 76.5° Inclined Geometry

• The VS4 adopts Varia's iconic 76.5° inclined architecture, which efficiently feeds coffee beans into the burrs while maintaining a nearly vertical exit path for clean, consistent output.

This geometry reduces retention, optimizes particle density, and supports true single-dosing performance—laying the groundwork for the VS4's speed, cleanliness, and grind uniformity.

Precision Independent Hopper Adjustment

• The VS4's 10-micron stepless adjustment system provides ultra-fine control across the entire grind range, enabling barista-level precision for every brew type.

• An independent internal threading mechanism eliminates thread stripping, hopper drift, and wear, ensuring smooth and repeatable adjustments that maintain their precise calibration over years of use.

• Every action feels precise, solid, and perfectly damped—a tactile manifestation of mechanical integrity.

Hopper Quick-Connect System

• The VS4 introduces a patented quick-connect hopper system designed to provide tool-free, instant access to the grinding chamber.

• A precisely engineered bayonet mechanism requires only a 10-degree rotation of the hopper ring to lock and release—allowing the hopper to be fully opened in less than a second.

• When disengaged, the system also automatically disconnects the power circuit between the motor and the chamber assembly, ensuring absolute safety during cleaning or maintenance.

• Reconnecting is just as simple: the hopper aligns and locks with a smooth, precise motion, instantly restoring full power and calibration.

Modular Drive and Chamber Assembly

• The VS4 introduces a patented modular chamber and drive assembly, allowing the entire burr and drive shaft system to be removed from the grinder body in one go.

• The hopper quick-connect mechanism connects and disconnects via a precisely engineered bayonet system. Upon detachment, the entire burr chamber, drive shaft, and bearing assembly are lifted as a unified module—this module is laser-aligned, independently sealed, and mechanically isolated from the motor housing.

• Because burr alignment, bearings, and chamber geometry are machined as one unit, the VS4 consistently maintains concentricity with zero mechanical drift over time. Each reconnection restores factory precision—no recalibration, no misalignment, no compromises.

Superior Burr Design

• The VS4 features a 53mm 6-core conical Supernova burr set, meticulously designed for clarity, uniformity, and smooth particle flow.

• Its geometry is carefully modeled to balance cutting speed and particle flow, reducing resistance and ensuring even distribution across the entire grind range.

• A future-proof burr interface allows for upgradeable burr sets, with releases planned for early 2026 (requiring only minimal disassembly for installation).

Powerful Brushless Motor and Planetary Gearbox

• The VS4's 200W brushless motor operates almost silently and efficiently, producing exceptionally smooth torque while minimizing mechanical vibrations. Its planetary gearbox transmits power through a multi-stage reduction system, stabilizing RPM under load and consistently maintaining burr performance.

• This precise drive system ensures stable torque output even when grinding dense, light-roast coffee beans or using finer espresso grind settings. Tests confirm RPM stability within a ±1.5% tolerance across the entire speed range (150–300 RPM), which directly translates to consistent particle size and predictable flavor results.

Electro-Dynamic Flow Geometry

• Every contour within the chamber features Electro-Dynamic Flow Geometry, a proprietary surface topology designed to guide ground coffee along a precise, turbulence-free path.

• This design prevents static charge accumulation and directs particles to flow in a smooth, laminar fashion, reducing friction, clumping, and waste.

• Combined with a fully anodized unibody grinding chamber and grinding shaft, this creates an exceptionally smooth surface with very low adhesion. Coffee grounds flow freely during grinding, maintaining a uniform density and distribution from the burrs to the outlet.

• The VS4 achieves stability and cleanliness uncommon in compact grinders by combining advanced chamber geometry with a low-friction anodized surface—a precise orchestration of airflow, particle movement, and static control.

LOW RETENTION DESIGN

The VS4 features the world's first patented unibody burr chamber, precision CNC machined from a single block of alloy and fully anodized for extremely low material adhesion. This seamless construction eliminates part lines and seams, creating a continuous internal pathway that optimizes ground flow and drastically reduces coffee retention.

• All surfaces within the grinding chamber—including the grinding shaft—are precision milled and anodized for an exceptionally smooth finish, ensuring extremely low static, near-zero retention, and excellent long-term durability. Combined with Varia's quick-connect bayonet system, the grinding chamber can be disassembled for cleaning without tools and instantly reinstalled for perfect alignment and calibration.

TESTED RETENTION DATA (10g Dose):

WITHOUT RDT

• Espresso (Setting 3):0.10–0.35g

• Filter (Setting #10):0.05–0.15g

WITH RDT

• Espresso (Setting 3):0.00–0.06g

• Filter (Setting #10):0.00–0.02g.

Test Conditions: 150 RPM (45% humidity, medium/light roasted Arabica blend, rested 7 days). Test results may vary depending on bean varietal, roast level, freshness/degassing state, and environmental factors. Doses tested without RDT used a bellow (3-4 pumps); doses tested with RDT did not use a bellow.

RPM CONTROL

The VS4 features a variable stepped RPM system, allowing you to set your preferred grinding speed once and lock it in.

With a single press, the grinder starts and operates at your chosen, precise RPM. No need to reset or readjust between each grind. The RPM remains fixed, stable, and repeatable with every grind.

This RPM stability doesn’t just simplify the workflow:

• It impacts fines production

Higher RPMs increase particle fracture, while lower RPMs generate a tighter, more uniform distribution. A fixed RPM ensures consistent results for each dose.

• It stabilizes particle distribution

Controllable, predictable motor speed means consistent shear force on the burrs—critical for clarity, sweetness, and repeatability in both espresso and pour-over.

• It aids in retention control

Uniform RPM reduces micro-vortex turbulence within the chamber, leading to cleaner evacuation and more stable low-retention performance.

Dual-Bearing Drive System

• Mechanical precision begins with perfect alignment.

• The VS4's drive shaft is supported by a dual-bearing system—two precision bearings mounted within the lower chamber, mated to concentric mounting pads machined into the grinder body to stabilize the shaft under load.

• This construction ensures that the burr set maintains perfect concentricity and stability, as well as parallelism throughout the grinding cycle, even at high torque levels.

Each bearing is seated within a rigid housing machined by CNC tools to prevent drift or deformation after prolonged use. The resulting drive system eliminates axial movement and vibrations, preserving alignment, reducing wear, and ensuring long-term mechanical integrity.

• When combined with the brushless motor and planetary gearbox, this alignment system allows for smooth rotational balance and consistent grinding performance, grind after grind.

Fine Calibration and Alignment

• In addition to its stepless adjustment ring, the VS4 includes a fine-tune system integrated into the outer burr holder.

• A five-hole design allows users to mechanically shift the burrs' zero point with ±20 microns of precision, enabling ultra-fine alignment. This ensures perfect burr parallelism and allows for laboratory-grade adjustments to the grinder—compensating for burr wear or alignment shifts over time.
